Mimicking TorrentFreak’s Semantic Style: First Paragraph Bold In WordPress

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Many developers love how TorrentFreak semantically lays out their blog.

The following tutorial will help you display the first paragraph normally on the Main Index Template of your WordPress blog ….

torrentfreak1.png

while making it bold in the full story (or Single Post) page when you click Continue… as seen below.

torrentfreak2.png

Getting Started

You need to be familiar with themes. In this tutorial, I will be using the default them with WordPress.

– index.php — Main Index Template

In this file, you will change this:

<?php the_content(’Read the rest of this entry »’); ?>

to this:

<?php the_excerpt(’Read the rest of this entry »’); ?>

– single.php — Single Post

In this file, you will add this just below the DIV class=entry

<b><?php the_excerpt(); ?></b>

Factoring Financing Promo On GoBig Network Indicates There Is Market For Dotcoms Starved For Cash… Yet Again.

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

:) If you act on this latest e-mail promo from the GoBig Network, it is time to close down your dot-com and find a real job … what am I talking about?

Well, ya see, if you need to engage in factoring, your cash flow absolutely sucks; thus, your company is already on its last legs with declining consumer demand and the credit crunch. If you participate in factoring, you will pay for it later. (This may be where some of the 500 Trillion of off-the-book debt may be hiding, which is why the credit crisis is just getting started, but then again I digress.)

Consult your accounting officer chef for details on what I am talking about.

Yes, I am a wet towel at the party, but I guess that’s what happens when you spend as much time as I do in reality.

Here is the promo below:

Phil Hendrie Points Out That It Is What It Is: People Still Hear What They Want To Hear

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Phil Hendrie is a modern-day Homer (not the Simpson, the poet…). He has summarized everything that is completely wrong with a country’s attention span in about 5 minutes. Listen to the clip twice and you hear what might have really sorta happened. More later..

Deal Or No Deal: Flirty Non-Verbals?

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Non-verbals are always affect translation.

He gives the strong gaze and a compliment with a slightly deeper voice.

She adjusts her headset… or does she? .. a chance for miscommunication.

dnd2.png

Translation can be vertical or horizontal. It can be encoded then decoded, decoded then encoded or encoded twice and decoded once. That is human translation.

Embellishing your looks … the word “embellishing” is has a negative meaning. It means falsely creating an illusion that does not really exist.

Building Legos With SolidWorks Is Fun Fun Fun

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

This is a good practice of geometry. You use calipers to measure dimensions then use sketches to calculate how the solid is formed. Good exercise in applied geometry :-)

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Can you say Quadrillion? If not, start practicing.

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

You need to get used to saying Quadrillion …

Trillion is quickly becoming chump change… as seen in the debt markets now

If you don’t feel existential now, you will soon. The risk mounting in the bond market becomes insurmountable.

Jack Halpern’s CJKI Web Site Refresh Looks Great, Still An Awesome Resource

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Like MandarinTools, the CJK Institute was one of the first online resources for learning Chinese and other Asian languages. Jack Halpern has just released a bigger and better version of this tremendous resource with a fresh new web site. He is a professional lexicographer. I consider his writings essential for proper dictionary development.

Irrational Exuberance In Hong Kong Seen In Youth Trying Enter Financial Sphere of Influence

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Watching TVB in Hong Kong, I found so many funny commercials. One of them was for a new program called MoneySmart. Of course, Hong Kong advertising is notorious for exaggeration, but what I found interesting is way in which they commercialize personal finance.

picture-3.png

I thought personal finance was about restraint and wisdom from elders, but the advertisement was designed to get your heart pumping. Is it possible they are tapping into the Irrational Exuberance that is dominant now in the Hong Kong stock market? or maybe this is a new way to reach people and show them how to diversify before it is too late?

I have no clue. I am not an expert.

Downsized. In This Case, A Good Thing

Friday, January 18th, 2008

This is a case where being downsized is quite wonderful. I have been running and jogging and huffing and puffing (well, now more just running) in preparation for my first marathon later this year. So, I have gone from size 18½ to 16 … happy happy joy joy.

Giving Up On Chocolate Fuel Cell Research Patent

Friday, January 18th, 2008

A few years back, I started working on a way to build a chocolate fuel cell. Today was my last test and failure. If anyone wants to patent the chocolate fuel cell, go right ahead. I don’t care anymore. Moving on to other things.

Didn’t work? Ya. Difficult because of sugar … blah blah blah .. Gibbs Free Energy … blah blah … you know the drill. This looks like a cake but it is actually a very delicate ceramic. :-)

Not edible at all… darn.

Me Working at Google? What? They are hiring dumb people now?

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Google hires very smart people who are solving particular problems related to their business model. At this time, I can safely say I am not very smart.

Well, not yet. Working on it. ^^ My brain loves to pump iron.

Also, I am neither left brain nor right brain. My brain is more like jelly doughnut donut. “Left brain” on the outside with my “right brain” on the inside and it’s really mushy inside and spongy so it can absorb data … I believe it is called osmotic stupidity (I could be wrong). :) Anywho…

Working at Google would be cool though … as seen here …

Video Tutorial: Installing Chinese Seal Chop Widget For WordPress

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

It appears that most of the bugs have been squashed in 0.7.4 of the Chinese Seal Chop Widget; so, hopefully I can release a truly stable version shortly. In the meantime, here is a video I quickly threw together (with no audio) and placed on YouTube. The idea is … “OK, I have the video tutorial to supplement replace the documentation and some FAQs”.

Several Loaves of Bread Per Gallon

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

I have talked earlier about price of food and gas.

We are now approaching Three Loaves of Bread Per Gallon.

The unit loaves of bread per gallon started as a joke. It is now an economic indicator for me. It is a currency-neutral calculation and has helped me predict market direction very well.

Citigroup Is Done. D - U - N. Done.

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Citigroup has no takers from emerging markets, including China.

http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D8U5M7TO0.htm

And funny thing is… China may have just awakened the spirit of acquisition from emerging market funds. What am I talking about?

Well, if Citigroup is trying to raise more money, it means that all the fingers and toes are plugged in the dike and there is really no way to block purchase of capital assets in the U.S.

Sit back and grab some popcorn as the dollar collapses and the subprime crisis spreads into the treasury markets. :(

Android’s Emulator Is Spiffy

Pinyin Practice Provides Perfect Practice for Pinyin

Pinyin Practice: I absolutely love this web site created by Alan Peterka.

Try using this learning tool called Speaking Chinese. It provides some nice self-paced lessons and exercises for vocabulary and grammar.

Another application I really like on the site is the Self-Quiz, which helps me keep my pinyin spelling fresh in my mind, especially with initials and finals.

Removing Wikipedia Links From Search Links

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

Developer’s Notebook

Wikipedia is one of the most interesting ideas for online collaboration. However, the main weakness is that Wikipedia is powered by an army of gerbils. When someone moves their cheese, the model will fall apart.

Thus, removing the Wikipedia links from Primezero Chinese Tools search results is a smart move as users can always search Wikipedia directly and find language links if available.

Furthermore, it functions as a closed ecosystem on pages that have been adopted as a “pet rock” or “chia pet” of sorts.

Revisiting Primezero Piano and Possibility of Piano-Based Music Melody Search Engine

Friday, January 4th, 2008

The following is an excerpt from my developer’s notebook, so it will appear to be an incomplete thought.

Developer’s Notes:

  1. Primezero Piano was a fun Flash project, when Flash was generally considered eye candy. I want to revisit this project and possibly apply the Primezero Piano to search functionality.
    pzpiano_revisited1.png
  2. I recently started playing with Apple’s iLife GarageBand and found a keyboard integrated into the program which is actually very spiffy. This allows you to play various instruments, which is one of the features I wanted to add to Primezero Piano in the next version. However…garagebandpiano.png
  3. Creating a search engine where I find songs based on melodies played would be very handy. So, I have been playing around with some code to get that working …
