Why am I developing this new Hanzi To Pinyin Converter at hanzitopinyin.com?

September 1, 2008 – 10:44 am

The BIG PICTURE is I want Chinese language learners to have maximum portability of their study materials.

Students should be able to build and share learning experiences with other learners.

One way is to encourage students to read news articles daily with Hanyu Pinyin displayed next to common characters.  Students should be able to download the conversion, re-upload it to the cloud server of their choice and re-purpose the original conversion.

Developer Notes: Learning To Read Chinese Using Primezero’s Hanzi To Pinyin Converter

August 30, 2008 – 2:12 pm

from my Developer Notes:

One of the cool things you can do with the Primezero Hanzi To Pinyin Converter is practice reading articles in Chinese.

When I first started learning Chinese, I used NJStar. However, it was not convenient to install NJStar CJK Word Processor to simply view a Hanzi To Pinyin Conversion of a simple text clipping.

So, I created my own Hanzi To Pinyin Converter.
URL: http://www.hanzitopinyin.com/

It is still in development but you can try out some conversions now. I want this conversion utility to provide users the following features for now:

  1. Simple copy, paste and conversion functionality.
  2. Ability to copy and paste the converted Hanzi and pinyin into Microsoft Word documents and other applications for further annotation.
  3. Ability to jump over to the Primezero i18n Terminal to research individual characters and similar words.
  4. Flexibility to meet user requests for new features with extensibility baked into the code design.

Tr2n (Tron 2) Trailer Brings Back Memories. Ahh yes. Memories.

July 26, 2008 – 5:22 pm

Gizmodo uses some hyperbole regarding the Tron 2 Trailer, yes, but .. they do have a point. Another Tron movie is exactly what this world needs. The trailer begins with a chase and ends with appearance of Jeff Bridges, which is just a terrific addition to the trailer’s setup for the new movie. You need to see it.

This is fantastic! Check out the trailer now.

John Maynard Keynes Was Right: “Money Doesn’t Matter”

John Maynard Keynes Was Right: “Money Doesn’t Matter”.

In fact, walking down the street and giving money to random persons would make them happy in the short-term. However, in the long-term, they will find themselves utterly miserable from the lack of purchasing power for food, heating, cooling, and smoking.

The currency is about to go to zero.

There is nothing we can do to stop it.

So, what do we do next?

Personalized English-Chinese Dictionaries for People Learning Chinese Is Next Big Thing

June 28, 2008 – 9:55 am

Everyone is looking for the next big thing in English-Chinese Dictionary design and development.

Unfortunately, I don’t have it. :)

Instead, I have a good idea about which companies will do well in the next 6 months with the Beijing Olympics approaching and the huge interest in Chinese languages this entails.

My two favorite companies right now are Nokia and Apple. They are attempting to penetrate the enterprise market where Blackberry dominates, so they are really taking some bold steps.

One area I am sure will grow is translation. Two people in two different timezones in two different languages should be able to communicate basic protocols and business objectives without fancy software. Nokia and Apple both provide new exciting opportunities for software developers, as the phones are bringing human machine interaction to a whole new level.

Personalized English-Chinese Dictionaries will help individuals build vocabulary. Combined with digital language tutors, the dictionaries will provide a new channel of interoperability and understanding.

Maybe.

Yves Saint Laurent has died at 71, a fabulous designer, just fabulous

June 1, 2008 – 8:00 pm

Design encompasses all the flows of creativity.

Yves Saint Laurent provided something intangible that will never be replaced: honesty of soul. This is why Pierre Bergé had faith in YSL’s ability to transform concepts and emotion into tangible surfaces that shaped the fashion industry and influenced design worldwide for the better.

A tiny ounce of YSL’s creativity flows through me. And I am better for it.

I already miss him.

C’est pourquoi Pierre Bergé avait YSL foi dans la capacité de transformer des concepts et des émotions tangibles dans les surfaces qui ont façonné l’industrie de la mode et de design influencé le monde pour le mieux.

Problems Surface as Credit Derivatives of Credit Derivatives Start Rotting

May 6, 2008 – 6:38 pm

Imagine successfully finding all the pieces to a broken porcelain cup and putting the cup back together.

Then imagine someone driving a dump truck over that porcelain cup, and asking you to put the cup back together again — FASTER this time. He then puts a gun to your head and starts the egg timer.

That’s what credit derivatives of credit derivatives are.

Does using Google Analytics affect your website search engine listing?

May 3, 2008 – 6:14 am

Does using Google Analytics affect your website search engine listing?

Yes. Removing Google Analytics can sink your position below the top 10. I have just confirmed that in an experiment. Removing GA speeds up your website, but the cost is lower “awareness” from Google.

Remember, Google was called “Back Rub” before it was called Google. You scratch their back, they’ll scratch yours.

But, but, but Google said it doesn’t affect it?

Google also said they are not looking to replace PayPal’s checkout service. Their payment solution is called…. Google Checkout.

Removing Google Analytics Speeds Up Queries by 65% .. wow, sucks for Google huh

April 22, 2008 – 8:43 pm

Your website may be feeling sluggish when it loads. Betchya dollars to donuts it is your Google Analytics dragging out your load time. :) Removing Google Analytics led to an immediate speed improvement on Primezero i18n Terminal.

When you are designing a web application for 1 user, all that data doesn’t matter. In fact, one could only conclude that Google Analytics ( * cough *, Urchin) was re-tooled by Google for the purpose of selling AdWords. ;)  Smart people.

Agreed with Nutrun. Removing Google Analytics removes speed penalty

April 22, 2008 – 8:31 pm

first, read:

http://nutrun.com/weblog/does-google-analytics-make-your-pages-slow/

then, ponder …

every snippet of codes for engine performance. two things are slowing down the query on the Primezero i18n Terminal:

1. Google Analytics  + GoogleBots for Adsense

2. MSN and Yahoo bots (sorta, bots but not really bots)

hmm let’s see.

Gaming the System

April 22, 2008 – 3:53 pm

I hear about it more and more … and unfortunately, even more nowadays. It is scary that wherever a system exists, a method to “game” it also exists. How dreadful.

Examples of people “gaming the system”:

  • U.S. Tax Code
  • Stocks and Bonds
  • Commodities
  • Hedge Funds
  • Google at recent FCC auction (ya, I said it …)
  • Contractors double-dipping for contracts
  • $500 hammers
  • WordPress Themes Viewer
  • Digg.com users
  • Slashdot users
  • venture capitalists….
