Sample Test Item 40 (2003)

setting up the problem, we see create a similar triangles diagram, where the tree is red and the pole is blue.

the tall tree casts a 20ft. shadow while the 5ft. pole only casts a 4ft shadow. we have the following diagram:

fig40_draw.jpg

using the principle of similar triangles, we can say these ratios are true:

(x / 20) = (5 / 4)

solving for x, we find that:

x = (5 / 4) * 20

x = 25

the tree is 25ft.

choice B is the answer

The domain is the set of x-values in a given function.

Choices A and D discuss y-values (the range). These two choices are eliminated.

The domain of the relation is only between 0 and 5.

The best choice is Choice B.

Only Choice C dilates (or expands or scales) the shape.

Thus, it provides a similar and yet not congruent transformation.

Choice C is the only answer.

Sample Test Item 34 (2003)

The shape is only rotated around origin.

The only choice is Choice C.

The second equation is a multiple of the first equation.

Thus, the lines coincide, which is Choice A.

Sample Test Item 31 (2003)

These diagrams show the definition of SAS.

The only choice is B.

Choices A and D are too steep for the slope of the equation.

So, you only have two options.

The y-intercept is at y = -1.

Thus, Choice C is our only possible answer.

Sample Test Item 18 (2003)

2003-item181.png

If you divide both sides of the second equation by 3.

You will have

y = 2x - 2.

This has the same slope as

y = 2x + 6.

Thus, these lines are parallel; that is they will never intersect.

Choice B is the correct answer.

Looking at our choices, we know we can eliminate two obvious ones: Choice A, the distance between the sea level and the submarine and Choice D, the distance between the helicopter and sea level.

If the minumum distance between the helicopter and the submarine is the distance to sea level (4,500 feet) then Choice B is not possible.

The only choice we have is Choice C.

Sample Test Item 19 (2003)

This is a 3-4-5 triangle. You should be able to calculate this without using the Pythagorean Theorem, by using similar triangles. If you want, you can still use the Pyhtagorean Theorem. Choice C is the correct solution. Hint: To save time on the exam, practice mental math with triangles.
