Sample Test Item 6 (2005)

2005-item6.png

This problem is testing to see if we can simplify this
expression using the correct order of operations.
Given expression:

14 – 4 * [2 + 3 * (8 – 5)] step 0

14 – 4 * [2 + 3 * 3] step 1, simplify (8 – 5)

14 – 4 * [2 + 9] step 2, simplify 3 * 3

14 – 4 * [11] step 3, simplify 2 + 9

14 – 44 step 4, simplify 4 * 11

-30 step 5, simplify 14 - 44

Correctly done, you simplify your expression to Choice C.

Sample Test Item 4 (2005)

2005-item4.png

Let’s look at this sequence:
1st: 2
2nd: 2 + 1 -> 3
2rd: 3 + 3 -> 6
4th: 6 + 5 -> 11
5th: 11 + 7 -> 18
6th: 18 + 9 -> 27
7th: 27 + 11 -> 38
Choice A is the correct answer.

Sample Test Item 2 (2005)

In this problem, we need to substitute the numbers for the
variables and simplify the expression:

x + 4y

x = 4

y = -5

4 + 4 * -5 = 4 – 20 = -16
The correct answer is Choice C.

Sample Test Item 64 (2003)

2003-item64.png

We start with this equation:

-12x2 + 17x + 5 = y

If x = -2, then we find that

-12(-2)2 + 17(-2) + 5 = y

-12(4) + 17(-2) + 5 = y

-48 + -34 + 5 = y

-77 = y

The correct answer is Choice D.

The table provide gives some very important information.

The first hint is found in the second row, where we find the y-intercept.

At the y-intercept, when x=0, y=4.

From our choices, the only possible answers are equations with a y-intercept at y = 4.

Hey! Only one equation in our choices meets this requirement.

So, Choice C is the correct answer.

Sample Test Item 56 (2003)

The first three terms of this series are:

(-7/4), (-10/4), (-13/4)

the next number is -4, we can also say that it is

(-16/4)

the next number is:

(-19/4)

The numerator adds -3 for each term. The denominator remains constant at 4.

It is safe to assume that Choice C is the correct answer.

Can you guess the next term?

Sample Test Item 55 (2003)

This graph depicts an object gaining height with distance then losing height with distance.

Choice B is the only choice that makes sense.

NOTE: This is NOT a correct illustration of projectile motion. If you think this question is a little strange, you are right.

Sample Test Item 52 (2003)

2003-item52.png

The problem states that the first minute is $1.25. Thus, Choices A and C are eliminated.

The problem also says that for each additional minute, the caller will be charge $0.75.

If the total number of minutes on the phone is some time m. Then the additional minutes, excluding the first minute will be some shorter time (m - 1).

Your only answer is Choice B.

In fact, Choice D is overcharging you

Sample Test Item 51 (2003)

2003-item51.png

Method #1

Starting with the expression

2x(x2 + 3xy + 6y2)

We multiply out the expression

2x3 + 6x2y + 12xy2

Choice B is the correct answer.

Method #2

Another way to look at this is eliminating the impossible answers.

Choices C and D are not possible because the first x term is multiplied by an x2 term yielding an x3 term as the first term of the expression.

Choice A is not possible because the last term must be an xy2 term.

The only correct answer is Choice B.

Sample Test Item 50 (2003)

2003-item50.png

We start with

5x + (5/3)x ≤ -2x - (2/3)

Group like terms…

7x ≤ (-7/3)

Sovling for x

x ≤ (-1/3)

Choice B is the correct answer.
